THE JoANN FALLETTA INTERNATIONAL GUITAR CONCERTO COMPETITION

Format of the Competition
Three rounds of judging will take place. The Panel of Judges will consist of internationally acclaimed musicians, pedagogues and other luminaries form the broader music world. Decisions of the Panel will be final and the Panel reserves the right to withhold any award should it deem necessary.
Preliminary Round: Submission of high quality, unedited CD.
Semifinal Round: Public performances in the Mary Seaton Room of Kleinhans Music Hall on Tuesday, June 1st & Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010.
Final Round: Public performance on Friday, June 4, 2010 in Kleinhans Music Hall with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, JoAnn Falletta, Conductor.
For those participants advancing to the Final Round, rehearsals will be held on Thursday, June 3rd and Friday, June 4th, 2010 with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra in Kleinhans Music Hall. The orchestra management reserves the right to change the rehearsal schedule.
The JoAnn Falletta International Guitar Concerto Competition 2010
Rules of the Competition and Application Information.
The Competition is open to classical guitarists of all ages at the onset of their careers and who are not represented by major artist management and are not a party to an exclusive recording contract.
Preliminary Round: One of the following concerti must be chosen for the entire Competition and the same concerto is to be performed for each round of the Competition. Competitors will not be permitted to change the concerto selection after the Application Form has been submitted.
- Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Concerto No. 1 in D major, Op. 99
- Manuel Ponce: Concierto del Sur
- Joaquin Rodrigo: Concierto de Aranjuez
- Joaquin Rodrigo: Fantasia para un Gentilhombre Roberto
- Sierra: Folias. NB. If the Roberto Sierra “Folias” is selected, the entire concerto MUST be performed on the CD.
- Heitor Villa-Lobos: Concierto for Guitar and Small Orchestra
Contestants must submit a high quality, unedited CD of the following repertoire to be reviewed by a panel of judges. Do NOT introduce yourself vocally on the CD.
- One work at least 5 minutes in duration from a “live” performance.
- The first movement from the concerto of the competitor’s choice, from those listed above, with piano or orchestral accompaniment. All cadenzas MUST be performed on the CD.
NB. If the Roberto Sierra “Folias” is selected, the entire concerto MUST be performed on the CD.
Required piece: Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco: Tarantella. Ricordi Edition. - Free choice program of 5 – 8 minutes not including any previously mentioned material or requirements.
Judges will evaluate the entire CD program for each applicant and assign a point-based score for the overall performance. Unlike previous editions of this competition, the eight highest overall scores will then be selected to advance to the Semifinal Round. The competitors with highest scores will advance regardless of what concerti are chosen.
Public rounds of the competition will be recorded and filmed for subsequent production and broadcast. Neither the Western New York Public Broadcasting Association nor its assignees or licensees may be held liable for any payments to competitors arising out of materials derived from competition performances or rehearsals. Applicants are required to sign a release on the Application Form yielding all rights to such materials to the WNYPBA, its assignees or licensees.
Semifinal Round: 8 Semifinalists will be selected from the Preliminary Round to perform a solo public recital of the repertoire indicated below, approximately 25-minutes.
A random drawing will determine the order of performers for the Semifinal Round.
- Candidates shall play their entire concerto with piano accompaniment. (Accompanist and one rehearsal will be provided. However, Competitors have the option to perform with their own accompanist at the Competitor’s own expense.)
Free Choice program of a maximum of 8 minutes duration.
The finalists will be announced immediately following the Semifinal round on Wednesday, June 2, 2010.
Final Round: 3 candidates from the Semifinal Round will be selected to perform in a public performance with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. This performance will include all movements from the chosen concerto. The Conductor reserves the right to select the order of performers for the Final Round. Should more than one Finalist perform the same concerto, order of performers will be determined by random drawing. Winners will be announced and prizes awarded immediately following the Final Round on Friday, June 4, 2010.

Application Requirements Checklist:
- Official Application Form, properly completed and signed.
- One CD for Round One as indicated above.
- Proposed program for the Semifinal Round. See information in Semifinal Round
above. - Two black & white or color photos.
- A 200 word biography.
- Application Fee in the form of a check or money order in the amount of $150.00US, non-refundable, and payable to:
- Western New York Public Broadcasting Association (WNYPBA). Or credit card information such as name on card, card number and expiration date.
- Foreign applicants must submit photocopy of valid passport or visa.
Application materials must be Postmarked no later than, April 1, 2010. Please send all materials in one complete package. Separate items will not be accepted. Any incomplete application package will be disqualified. Late applications will not be considered. All application materials will become the property of WNYPBA and will not be returned.

Accommodations will be provided to all performers (not accompanists) who qualify for Semifinal Round of the Competition. Applicants who qualify for the Semifinal Round will be notified by April 20, 2010 and an announcement will also appear on the www.fallettacompetition.org web site.
